The Museo Santa Caterina hosts the exhibition From Picasso to Van Gogh: Stories of painting from abstraction to Impressionism. Masterpieces from the Toledo Museum of Art.

The exhibition, curated by Marco Goldin and promoted by the Municipality of Treviso with Linea D’ombra, will be open from November 15, 2025, to May 10, 2026. It will bring over sixty works from the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio, a prestigious American institution founded in the late nineteenth century and now one of the most important centers for 20th-century art, to Europe for the first time.

This is an extraordinary journey back in time, a trip through art from 20th-century American abstraction to European Impressionism. It establishes a constant dialogue between the two sides of the Atlantic to understand—through extraordinary masterpieces, including landscapes, portraits, genre figures, and still lifes—why abstraction was reached and where the journey began.

The installation, enhanced by projections that contextualize the paintings in their original settings, features works by Piet Mondrian alongside Reinhardt, the geometric art of Josef Albers, and the landscapes with figures by William Merritt Chase in conversation with those of Berthe Morisot and Camille Pissarro, leading up to Cézanne, Monet, Gauguin, and Hopper. The exhibition opens with a masterpiece by Richard Diebenkorn from his Ocean Park series and concludes with Vincent Van Gogh’s famous painting Auvers, Wheat Field with a Reaper, to which the final space is entirely dedicated. These two works are eighty years apart and vastly different in style, yet they are united by the emotional tension of yellow and blue.
